Editor's verdict

Anytype is a solid freemium pick, rated 4.3/5 by 278 users. Best for building a private, offline-capable knowledge base and managing research and writing projects with full data ownership. Standout: local-first with end-to-end encryption for full privacy. Watch out: steeper learning curve than Notion or Obsidian.

Hands-on reviewTested by John Pham· Last tested May 15, 2026

Tested Anytype over four weeks building a personal knowledge graph plus a small team workspace for three project collaborators. Baseline was Tana for the typed-knowledge angle and Obsidian for local-first markdown. Specifically wanted to validate the local-first encrypted sync, the object-type system, and end-to-end encryption claims against Tana and the broader Notion-alternative landscape. Roughly 1,400 objects created across both workspaces during the test window.

Local-first architecture with end-to-end encryption is the headline feature and it actually works - data stays on device, sync is peer-to-peer through Any-Sync, and the privacy story is genuinely the strongest in the productivity-tool category. Object types and relations gave the knowledge graph genuine structure without the steep Tana learning curve - templates for person, project, meeting, and book worked out of the box. Offline mode is real and seamless, unlike Tana or Notion. The interface stayed snappy even at 1,400 objects, faster than Notion at equivalent scale. Free tier is generous - 1 GB of synced data covers most personal use.

AI features are essentially absent compared to Tana or Notion AI - no synthesis across objects, no AI-assisted summarization, no GPT-style query interface. Multi-device sync occasionally lagged by 30 to 90 seconds after edits, requiring a manual refresh. Collaboration features in shared spaces are bare-bones - no rich commenting, no inline mentions, no live cursors. Web app is missing several desktop features, and there is no public sharing equivalent to Notion sites. Search across object relations is functional but slower than Tana once past 1,000 objects. Documentation and community resources are thin compared to Notion or Obsidian.

Best for privacy-conscious individuals and small teams who want a structured knowledge graph with local-first guarantees and zero-knowledge encryption. Tana remains the right pick when AI-augmented synthesis across typed nodes is the actual job. Obsidian still wins on raw markdown ergonomics and plugin ecosystem. Notion fits collaborative teams who treat docs as the primary artifact. Pick Anytype when ownership and privacy of knowledge data outweigh AI features.

Avoid if

Anyone who wants AI synthesis across knowledge objects should pick Tana instead - Anytype has no AI surface to speak of. Teams who collaborate heavily through inline comments and live cursors will find the multiplayer experience too thin. Anyone needing public-share or web-publishing workflows will reach for Notion. Plugin enthusiasts and Obsidian power-users will miss the open ecosystem.

About Anytype

Anytype is an open-source, local-first knowledge management platform that stores your data on your device rather than in the cloud. It offers blocks, databases, wikis, and task management similar to Notion, but with end-to-end encryption and offline-first architecture. AI features help you write, summarize, and organize content within your private workspace. Privacy-conscious users, developers, and researchers choose Anytype because they want the power of a modern knowledge tool without sending their data to a third-party server. The peer-to-peer sync lets you share workspaces without a central server. Its object-based data model is more flexible than traditional document editors, supporting complex knowledge graphs and custom data types for power users who have outgrown other tools.
