Brilliant Directories

I evaluated Brilliant Directories as the replacement platform for a regional chamber of commerce running approximately 420 paying member businesses across a mid-size US metro, plus a secondary site concept for a 180-agent real estate network. The chamber had been on Wild Apricot for six years and was dissatisfied with the directory search experience plus the revenue cut on event tickets plus the limited visual customization. I ran a 7-day free trial, imported a sample of 50 member records, configured directory categories, payment plans, email broadcasts, and the AI content engine, and shipped a staging site end to end.

Time to launch was the biggest win. The setup wizard asked eight questions (industry, geography, logo, color, directory purpose, membership tiers, payment processor, and theme) and auto-provisioned a working site in approximately 40 minutes. Importing 50 member records via CSV took 12 minutes including field mapping. Configuring three membership tiers (free listing, standard at 240 USD per year, premium at 480 USD per year with featured placement) and wiring Stripe for annual recurring billing was done in under 30 minutes with the built-in form builder. The AI content engine drafted 50 member listing descriptions from the imported business name plus category plus city, which saved roughly 8 hours of copywriting even after a 20 percent manual edit pass. Searchable directory with map view, category filters, and featured-listing highlighting worked out of the box with correct schema markup for Google. Email broadcasting to the 50 imported members with a welcome newsletter sent in 4 minutes with 100 percent delivery to Gmail inboxes (helped by the included transactional email infrastructure). Native support for member-submitted events plus event ticketing with no transaction fees was a direct cost win over Wild Apricot which took 2.9 percent per ticket.

Design limitations and settings depth were the friction points. The default theme looked distinctly like a template: generic card-based layout, standard sans-serif, basic hero. Pushing the design toward a modern aesthetic required editing custom CSS plus overriding template files across the Pages plus Design plus Branding plus Advanced sections, with settings spread so that I spent 90 minutes just locating the right panel to change the directory grid breakpoint. The admin UI has over 1000 configuration options accessible through 24 top-level menu items, which is powerful but overwhelming for first-time setup. Native integrations beyond Stripe plus PayPal plus Zapier are thin: syncing the member list to Mailchimp required a Zapier zap, syncing to the chambers Constant Contact account required another zap, and connecting to QuickBooks for accounting reconciliation required a third-party add-on at separate cost. Multilanguage support was weak enough that if the chamber wanted a Spanish toggle for members, we would have had to build it manually with a plugin add-on or custom code. The one-site-per-subscription constraint meant that running both the chamber directory plus the real estate network would require two separate 97 USD per month subscriptions totaling 2328 USD per year rather than a single workspace fee.

Verdict: pick Brilliant Directories when the use case is a membership-based directory or association site with 100 to 10000 members, bundled hosting plus payments plus email plus directory in one subscription matters, no revenue cut on member transactions is a priority, and 10 to 20 hours of settings-depth learning curve is acceptable. Pick Wild Apricot when the organization is nonprofit-first and recurring dues collection plus lapsed-member automation plus event registration workflow are the dominant use cases rather than directory search. Pick MemberClicks when the organization is a mid-size trade association needing full AMS plus accounting plus committee management plus LMS integration under one roof. Pick Mighty Networks when community engagement plus courses plus mobile-first discussion are the primary surfaces rather than searchable directory. Pick WordPress plus GeoDirectory plus WPForms plus WooCommerce when the operator has in-house dev capacity, wants full design control, and is comfortable maintaining 6 to 10 plugins. Pick Memberstack when the use case is a modern SaaS membership site layered onto Webflow or Framer with custom design. Pick a custom Next.js plus Supabase build when the directory needs search personalization, API-driven integrations beyond Zapier, or a scale beyond 50000 members.
