Codeium

I have used Codeium across the MytheAi codebase since the V0 launch in 2023, primarily through the VSCode extension on the founder workstation plus occasional JetBrains for the Supabase migration scripts. The free tier (unlimited completions for individual users) makes it the only viable autocomplete-class AI coding tool that does not require a paid seat for indie hackers, student developers, and learning-mode work.

Latency on the free tier is genuinely competitive with Cursor Pro (40 to 80 ms for inline completion versus Cursor 30 to 60 ms on the same connection). Codebase context window in chat is generous, scanning the whole repo for the supplied prompt without manual file selection. Tab-complete suggestions on TypeScript and Python feel sharper than the original GitHub Copilot 2023 baseline, particularly on framework-specific patterns (Next.js, Tailwind utility classes, React Server Components).

Where Codeium falls short: the Windsurf rebrand in 2024 confused branding, with the free Codeium tier still available but the marketing pushing toward Windsurf IDE which is paid. Inline edit refactors (the Cursor Composer or Edit-with-AI feature) lag Cursor Pro substantially in multi-file refactor coherence. Privacy posture is acceptable for personal projects but the free tier sends code snippets to Codeium servers, which gates use cases on regulated codebases. The JetBrains plugin trails the VSCode plugin in feature parity by roughly 6 months on every release cadence.

For solo developers, indie hackers, and student developers who need autocomplete-class AI coding without paying $20 per month for Cursor Pro or $10 per month for GitHub Copilot, the Codeium free tier is the right pick. For multi-file refactors, agent-level autonomous coding, or regulated codebases requiring on-premise inference, Cursor Pro or Claude Code with stricter data handling fits the workflow better.
