Editor's verdict

Consensus is a solid freemium pick, rated 4.4/5 by 3,600 users. Best for fact-checking health and nutrition claims and evidence-based content creation. Standout: answers backed by real peer-reviewed citations. Watch out: limited to academic research, no web sources. Has a free tier; paid plans start at $9/mo.

Hands-on reviewTested by John Pham· Last tested May 16, 2026

Tested Consensus on 2026-05-16 across 3 question types: a healthcare question on intermittent fasting metabolic effects, a social science question on remote work productivity, and a hard science question on perovskite solar cell efficiency limits. Pull factors are the consensus meter that visually shows yes plus no plus depends ratio across paper findings, GPT-4 synthesis that generates a plain-language summary with citations, and the freemium tier that allows 20 free questions per month without registration.

The consensus meter felt genuinely useful for the healthcare question. Asked about intermittent fasting and metabolic outcomes, Consensus returned a yes-leaning meter at 67 percent yes plus 8 percent no plus 25 percent mixed, with 30 cited papers behind the synthesis and a 200 word summary highlighting where the literature agrees plus disagrees. Social science remote work query produced a more split meter at 45 percent yes plus 30 percent depends, which correctly reflected the messier state of that literature. Hard science perovskite question produced a thin response with 7 papers, where the AI synthesis felt shallow vs the strong domain depth Elicit showed on similar narrow topics.

Two weaknesses limit production use. Consensus performs strongly on health plus social science questions where the literature has clear yes-no shapes, but struggles on questions where outcomes are quantitative spectrums rather than binary positions. The GPT-4 synthesis occasionally misclassifies a paper as supporting a position when the paper is actually neutral or commenting on methodology, requiring user review of the cited sources rather than trusting the meter alone.

Verdict for the research-AI cohort: Consensus is the cohort leader for quick evidence-based answers to yes-no questions across health plus social science, beating Elicit on speed plus user-friendliness for consumer research. Elicit remains stronger for systematic literature review plus multi-paper structured extraction. Pairs naturally with Elicit for deeper systematic review work plus Consensus for the fast first-pass evidence check that triages whether deeper review is warranted.

Avoid if

Avoid Consensus for hard science questions involving quantitative spectrums rather than binary positions where the consensus meter loses meaning, for systematic literature review where Elicit offers stronger structured extraction, or for researchers needing full-text PDF access where the citation links require paywall access at the source publisher.

About Consensus

Consensus is an AI-powered academic search engine that answers research questions using evidence drawn directly from peer-reviewed scientific literature. Unlike general-purpose AI assistants that generate answers from training data, Consensus retrieves and cites actual studies - making its outputs verifiable and grounded in published evidence. The core product is a search interface where you enter a research question - "Does intermittent fasting improve metabolic health?", "What is the effect of sleep deprivation on cognitive performance?" - and Consensus returns a summary of what the scientific evidence shows, alongside the individual studies that support each claim. Every statement in the summary is linked to its source paper. The Consensus Meter shows, at a glance, what proportion of the relevant studies support, oppose, or are neutral on a given claim. For questions where the evidence is contested or mixed, this gives a clearer picture of the state of the science than a single-source answer would. Paper details include the study design, sample size, publication year, journal, and a plain-language abstract summary. Users can filter by study type - randomised controlled trials, systematic reviews, cohort studies - to focus on the highest-quality evidence for a given question. The GPT-4 powered synthesise feature (on Pro) generates a structured summary across all retrieved studies, saving the time of reading each individually. Consensus is free for up to 20 searches per day. The Premium plan at $8.99 per month (billed annually) offers unlimited searches, advanced filters, and GPT-4 synthesis. Consensus is best suited to healthcare professionals, students, researchers, and evidence-conscious professionals who need scientifically grounded answers to research questions.
