Editor's verdict

Microsoft Copilot is a solid freemium pick, rated 4.3/5 by 11,200 users. Best for drafting emails and documents in outlook/word and summarizing excel data with natural language. Standout: built into Windows, Edge, and Microsoft 365. Watch out: less customizable than standalone ChatGPT.

Hands-on reviewTested by John Pham· Last tested May 8, 2026

I have used Microsoft Copilot across the M365 Business stack (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, PowerPoint) since the November 2023 general availability launch. The MytheAi team runs M365 Business Standard, so the $30 per user per month Copilot add-on layered on top of the existing $12.50 per user license. Tested specifically as a productivity layer for non-technical roles: marketing, operations, founder-level admin work.

Outlook is where Copilot earns the seat cost daily. The reply-drafting and thread-summary features cut email triage time roughly in half on a 50-thread morning queue. Excel formula generation from natural language (such as show monthly revenue by region as a pivot) consistently produces working pivot tables and chart embeds without manual range selection. Teams meeting recap with structured action items has replaced manual note-taking for internal standups since late 2024.

Where Copilot falls short: hallucination rates spike on company-specific internal data because Microsoft Graph indexing on shared drives is slower and shallower than the public-web context Copilot was trained on. Excel formula generation occasionally produces syntactically wrong references when source ranges have merged cells or non-standard headers. Designer image generation feels two generations behind Midjourney or even DALL-E 3 standalone. The $30 per user per month add-on cost stacks aggressively on top of M365 Business, which already runs $12.50 to $22 per user before Copilot enters.

For teams already locked into M365 Business or Enterprise where the productivity gain compounds across all five surface apps, Copilot at $30 per user per month is the right call as long as the team uses Outlook plus Word plus Excel daily. For teams on Google Workspace, Slack, or Notion as the primary collaboration surface, Microsoft Copilot offers minimal value: skip and use Claude or ChatGPT direct for the AI layer, since the Copilot moat is M365 surface integration and nothing else.

Avoid if

Your team runs primarily on Google Workspace, Notion, or Slack where the M365 surface integration delivers no value (Claude or ChatGPT direct is a cheaper AI layer). Or you need standalone AI image generation where Midjourney or DALL-E 3 produces materially better output. Or your team is under 5 seats where the $30 per user per month cost compounds faster than the productivity gain offsets.

About Microsoft Copilot

Microsoft Copilot is Microsoft's AI assistant, embedded across the Microsoft 365 product suite - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, and OneNote - as well as available as a standalone chat interface. For the hundreds of millions of people and organisations already using Microsoft 365, Copilot is the most frictionless path to AI-assisted productivity because it operates directly inside the tools they already use every day. In Word, Copilot drafts new documents from a brief prompt, rewrites selected sections, and summarises long documents into key points. In Excel, it generates formulas, creates charts from natural language descriptions, and analyses datasets with plain-language queries. In PowerPoint, it creates complete presentations from a prompt or a Word document, adds relevant visuals, and rewrites speaker notes. Copilot in Teams transcribes and summarises meetings in real time - so participants who join late or miss a meeting entirely can get an accurate summary of what was discussed and what decisions were made. This alone has been one of the most widely cited productivity wins by enterprise customers. In Outlook, Copilot drafts email replies based on context, summarises long email threads, and helps schedule meetings by understanding the context of conversations. Microsoft Copilot for Microsoft 365 is available as an add-on to business and enterprise Microsoft 365 subscriptions, priced at $30 per user per month. A free version of Copilot (chat-only, powered by GPT-4) is available at copilot.microsoft.com without a subscription. Copilot is best suited to organisations already standardised on Microsoft 365 who want AI assistance that works within their existing tools rather than requiring workflow changes.
