I tested Drift by installing the chat widget on a B2B SaaS pricing page, configuring 3 conversational playbooks (book-a-demo, pricing-question, support-handoff), wiring routing to Salesforce, and observing 250 chat sessions over two weeks against a baseline period without it. The cohort I had in mind was B2B marketing and inbound-sales teams using conversational marketing as a top-of-funnel lead-conversion mechanism, distinct from Intercom Fin (S139) which is AI customer-support deflection on existing accounts and from Front (S153) which is shared-inbox triage.
The playbook routing logic is the actual product. A pricing-page visitor who scrolled past 60 percent and stayed on page for 25 seconds got the right book-a-demo prompt 90 percent of the time, and the AI fallback for off-script questions handled them gracefully without dumping users into a broken chat dead-end. The Salesforce integration created lead records with the chat transcript attached automatically, which gave SDR follow-up actual context rather than a cold name and email. The meeting-booking handoff inside chat (Drift Calendar plus rep round-robin) consistently shaved 1-2 days off the demo-booking cycle compared to email back-and-forth.
What broke me was the cost-versus-result honesty after two weeks. The actual lift in qualified pipeline was real but modest (roughly 15 percent more SQLs from pricing-page traffic), and the per-month cost of Drift on a Premium plan plus the rep-time investment to maintain playbooks added up to a payback question that finance asked hard. The Drift AI chatbot that was the marketing-led sales pitch felt under-baked compared to Intercom Fin: it could answer simple FAQ questions but punted to human reps faster and more often than expected. The mobile-app experience for reps doing handoffs from outside their desk was clearly secondary to the desktop product.

Skip it if your traffic is mostly TOFU education content (chat will not convert it without a downstream nurture motion), if you need AI-deflection-first for support cases (Intercom Fin or Forethought go deeper), or if your team cannot maintain playbooks weekly (a static chat widget with poor playbooks performs worse than no chat at all).
