Hands-on reviewTested by John Pham· Last tested May 15, 2026

Tested FLUX models over three weeks across the official fal.ai hosted endpoints plus a local install of FLUX.1 dev on a single RTX 4090. Used cases included generating brand creative for two product launches, rapid art-direction exploration, and a self-hosted comparison run against Leonardo and Midjourney on identical prompts. Baseline was Leonardo AI for SaaS image-gen and Stable Diffusion XL for the prior open-source workflow.

FLUX.1 pro produced output quality genuinely competitive with Midjourney v6 on roughly 60 percent of test prompts, particularly on photorealistic subjects and architectural scenes - the prompt adherence is visibly better than SDXL by a large margin. Text rendering inside images was the best I have seen from any open-source model, scrambling letters far less often than Leonardo or Midjourney on the same prompts. Self-hosting FLUX.1 dev on a 4090 actually worked at roughly 8 seconds per image at 1024 by 1024 - real production speed for a local workflow. The Apache-licensed weights for schnell variant make commercial use straightforward.

Hand and face quality on closeups still lags Midjourney v6 - had to regenerate roughly three out of ten portrait gens. The hosted pricing on fal.ai or Replicate for FLUX.1 pro runs higher per image than Leonardo Pro tier at scale, which surprised me - the open-source label does not translate to cheaper inference unless you self-host. No native batch UI - you assemble grid output yourself via ComfyUI nodes or API scripting, which raised the skill floor compared to Leonardo. Brand-consistency workflows like style references require LoRA training, not point-and-click. No mobile workflow at all.

Best for technical creatives, ML engineers, and brands with privacy requirements who can self-host. The quality bar for an open model is genuinely impressive. Midjourney v6 remains the right pick for non-technical creatives who want best-in-class single-shot quality. Leonardo AI wins for marketing teams who need brand-consistency batch workflows out of the box. Pick FLUX when ownership of weights and inference matters.

Avoid if

Non-technical creatives will find the workflow tax (self-hosting, ComfyUI, LoRA training) more friction than the open-source benefits are worth. Marketing teams needing batch grid output with brand kits should pick Leonardo AI. Anyone needing a managed UI with no prompt engineering background will be happier in Midjourney. Mobile-first users have no path here at all.

About Flux

Flux is an image generation model developed by Black Forest Labs, the team behind the original Stable Diffusion research. The Flux model family - Flux.1 Dev, Flux.1 Schnell, and Flux.1 Pro - covers a range from fast open-source generation to high-quality commercial output. Flux is known for exceptional typography handling, which has long been a weakness of diffusion models, as well as improved anatomical accuracy and photorealistic rendering of human subjects. The open weights release of Flux.1 Dev made it immediately popular in the creative and developer community, leading to rapid adoption across image generation platforms including ComfyUI, Replicate, and fal.ai. For artists, designers, and developers who run their own image generation workflows, Flux provides a significant quality upgrade over earlier open models without the restrictions of proprietary alternatives. Commercial users can access the Pro tier through the Black Forest Labs API with pricing based on per-image generation.

Flux on MytheAi

Compared with Flux (1)

  • Flux vs MidjourneyMidjourney wins

Midjourney and Flux represent two different generations and philosophies of AI image generation. Midjourney is the established leader - it has the best aesthetic quality and stylistic coherence of any image model available, operates through a Discord-first interface that many users now find limiting, and requires a subscription with no free tier. Flux is the open-source challenger from Black Forest Labs, offering model weights that can be run locally or through APIs, with strong photorealistic output and significantly more flexibility in how it can be deployed and fine-tuned. Midjourney's output quality - particularly for artistic, stylised, and compositionally complex images - remains best-in-class. The Midjourney team has consistently improved the model's ability to understand aesthetic intent and produce images that require minimal iteration. Flux excels at photorealism and prompt accuracy, and its open-source nature makes it the practical choice for developers building image generation into applications, for users who want to run models locally, and for anyone who needs fine-tuning control. For end users wanting the highest aesthetic quality without technical friction, Midjourney wins. For developers, researchers, or power users who need flexibility, local execution, or commercial API access without per-image subscription limits, Flux is the more practical choice.
