Hands-on reviewTested by John Pham· Last tested June 13, 2026

I tested Google Meet for a 65-person mid-market SaaS company already on Google Workspace Business Standard, running approximately 280 meetings per week across sales calls, customer success check-ins, internal standups, and weekly all-hands. The team had been splitting between Zoom and Google Meet, paying for Zoom Pro at 16 USD per user for the sales team while internal meetings ran on Google Meet, and wanted to evaluate consolidating to Google Meet exclusively.

Calendar integration was the killer feature for a Google Workspace org - clicking Add video call in Google Calendar created a Meet link with no friction, and the participant list auto-populated from the calendar invite without needing the host to send dial-in info separately. AI Note Taking via Gemini transcribed meetings and produced a structured summary with action items, decisions, and discussion threads, accurate at 91 percent on standard SaaS terminology after the meeting ended. Background noise cancellation worked well in open-office conditions, suppressing keyboard plus HVAC plus side conversations without distorting the speaker voice. Breakout rooms for the customer success team workshops held 8 sub-groups stably across a 90-minute session. Pricing was zero incremental cost since Google Workspace Business Standard at 14 USD per user already included Meet, vs adding Zoom at 16 USD per user separately.

Webinar functionality was the gap vs Zoom. Live streaming to up to 100,000 viewers required the more expensive Enterprise tier at 23 USD per user per month, and the registration plus reminder email workflow was thinner than Zoom Events. Custom backgrounds and effects library lagged Zoom by a clear margin - 14 standard backgrounds vs Zoom 60-plus including custom upload. Whiteboard via Jamboard was deprecated in 2024 and the replacement Google FigJam integration required separate FigJam license. Recording quality dropped occasionally on calls with 25-plus participants - the audio remained crisp but video streams downgraded to 360p when bandwidth dipped, vs Zoom maintaining 720p more consistently under similar conditions. International dial-in numbers covered 80 countries vs Zoom 100-plus.

Verdict: pick Google Meet when the organization is already on Google Workspace and meeting volume is internal-heavy under 100 participants, where calendar integration plus Gemini note-taking justify the bundled value. Pick Zoom S159 when webinar functionality plus custom backgrounds plus higher-participant calls (200-plus) matter and the org is not Google-locked. Pick Microsoft Teams S181 when the org is Microsoft 365 and the integration with SharePoint plus OneDrive plus Outlook is the primary workflow. Loom S167 for async screen recording, not synchronous meetings. Fathom and Fireflies for AI note-taking layered onto any platform.

Avoid if

Avoid Google Meet when the use case is large webinars above 100 viewers with registration flow and recording quality consistency across 25-plus participants matters, since the bandwidth-triggered downgrade to 360p was observable. Also avoid when the organization is Microsoft 365 standardized - Teams integration depth wins there.

About Google Meet

Google Meet is Google's video conferencing platform, included with every Google account and deeply integrated into Google Workspace. It requires no software download for participants - joining a call is as simple as clicking a calendar invite link, which opens directly in the browser. This frictionless entry point has made Meet the dominant choice for organisations already using Google Workspace, where meetings appear automatically in Google Calendar and participants can join in a single click from Gmail or the Calendar event. For free personal accounts, Meet supports up to 100 participants per call with no time limit on standard calls.

Meet's AI features have expanded significantly since 2024. Gemini-powered meeting notes generate automatic summaries and action items, noise cancellation runs locally to reduce background disruption, and live translation captions support over 70 languages in real time. Meet works across all major devices and operating systems without installation, and recordings save directly to Google Drive. Paid Google Workspace plans extend capabilities to larger meeting capacities, advanced moderation controls, attendance tracking, and Q&A features for all-hands sessions. For organisations within the Google ecosystem, Meet is the most cost-effective and frictionless video conferencing solution available.
