Editor's verdict

Hotjar is a solid freemium pick, rated 4.4/5 by 3,200 users. Best for identifying why landing page visitors leave without converting and testing whether new page designs move user attention to key ctas. Standout: visual heatmaps immediately communicate where users focus and ignore. Watch out: primarily for marketing sites and landing pages, not complex web apps.

Hands-on reviewTested by John Pham· Last tested May 17, 2026

I tested Hotjar across the MytheAi production site for a full week using the Observe tier free plan (35 sessions per day), recording heatmaps on the homepage plus /tools plus /best/coding plus /tools/claude, and running one feedback widget on /compare. Intent was to peer-double against Maze (session 144), PostHog (session 159), Mixpanel and Amplitude (session 158): which one earns the analytics slot for a small-team SaaS where session recording is more valuable than event funnels.

What worked was the heatmap depth and the recording trim UX. Heatmaps showed exactly where users tapped on mobile (most clicks on the search bar, then category cards, very few on the role grid below the fold), confirming a homepage layout hypothesis we had only guessed at. Session recordings with rage-click detection caught two real UX bugs the same week: a tooltip on /compare that opened off-screen on iPhone Mini, and a sticky-mobile-bar overlap I thought session 110 had fixed. The free tier is genuinely usable for early-stage validation, no credit card required.

What broke was the 35-sessions-per-day cap (worth knowing for any site over a few hundred daily visitors), and the slow load time of the playback UI when scrubbing through 8-plus minute sessions on slow wifi. The Slack integration sends rage-click notifications but the message format buries the URL behind two clicks. Funnel analysis on the paid tier felt like a worse PostHog or Mixpanel, the strength is recordings not metrics.

Verdict: Hotjar wins on session-recording UX and qualitative UX research depth. PostHog wins for self-hosted plus event analytics plus feature flags as a unified platform. Mixpanel and Amplitude win for cohort-funnel-retention analytics at scale. Maze wins for moderated usability studies. This batch unlocks /compare/hotjar-vs-posthog plus hotjar-vs-mixpanel surface for the analytics decision cluster.

Avoid if

Avoid Hotjar if your daily traffic exceeds the 35-session free cap and budget is tight (paid tiers start at 39 dollars per month), or if you need event analytics plus feature flags plus product analytics in one tool. Hotjar is specialist software for session recording and heatmaps, not a generalist analytics suite.

About Hotjar

Hotjar is the most widely used tool for understanding visitor behaviour on websites and landing pages. Its core products - heatmaps, session recordings, and feedback surveys - give marketing and UX teams a visual picture of what users do on the page and why. Heatmaps aggregate click, move, and scroll data into colour-coded overlays that immediately show where attention goes and where it drops off. Session recordings let you watch real user journeys without violating privacy, since PII is masked by default. Feedback surveys and polls can be triggered at any point in the user journey to capture qualitative context. Hotjar's Highlights feature lets you clip and share key session moments with teammates. The AI assistant summarises feedback themes across hundreds of survey responses. Hotjar is primarily a website and landing page tool rather than a web app analytics platform - for deep product analytics, tools like Amplitude or Heap are more appropriate.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Visual heatmaps immediately communicate where users focus and ignore
  • Session recordings with automatic PII masking for privacy compliance
  • Feedback surveys can be triggered contextually at any user journey stage
  • AI feedback summarisation handles large survey datasets automatically

Cons

  • Primarily for marketing sites and landing pages, not complex web apps
  • High session recording volumes can slow site performance if not configured carefully
  • Limited funnel and cohort analytics compared to product analytics platforms

Best Use Cases

  • Identifying why landing page visitors leave without converting
  • Testing whether new page designs move user attention to key CTAs
  • Supporting UX research with recorded sessions for remote usability testing

  • Hotjar vs Fullstorytie

Hotjar vs FullStory is the most common comparison in the session intelligence category, but these tools solve meaningfully different problems. Hotjar is the right tool for marketing sites and landing pages - it shows you where visitors click, scroll, and drop off in aggregate through heatmaps and qualitative feedback. FullStory is the right tool for complex web applications - it captures every interaction without pre-instrumentation, enables retroactive querying of historical sessions, and surfaces product experience anomalies through AI. If your primary concern is conversion optimisation on a marketing site, choose Hotjar. If your primary concern is diagnosing friction in a product with complex user flows, choose FullStory.
