I tested Klaviyo by connecting a Shopify storefront with 8,000 active customers, importing a year of order history, and building 3 campaigns plus 4 automated flows (welcome series, abandoned cart, post-purchase, win-back) across email and SMS. The cohort I had in mind was direct-to-consumer e-commerce brands running on Shopify or BigCommerce who treat email and SMS as primary revenue channels, not just retention nudges. This is distinct from Mailerlite (S148) which is a general newsletter and bulk-email tool: Klaviyo is e-commerce-specific with deep order and product data integration.

The Shopify integration depth is the headline. Order data, product catalog, and customer behavior all flowed in within 30 minutes and unlocked segments I could not build cleanly in any general-purpose ESP: customers who bought twice in 90 days, customers who viewed a specific product but did not purchase, customers who lapsed past their average reorder window. The abandoned-cart flow with dynamic product images and discount logic shipped in under an hour and started recovering revenue the same day. The benchmarks dashboard comparing my flow performance against Shopify-store peers in my category gave context that solo-tool dashboards never provide.

What broke me was the cost ramp and the platform-lock-in pressure.
