Editor's verdict
Klaviyo is one of the strongest freemium tools in its category, rated 4.5/5 by 2,100 users. Best for abandoned cart recovery automations and post-purchase upsell and cross-sell sequences. Standout: deep native integration with Shopify, WooCommerce, and BigCommerce. Watch out: pricing scales steeply with list size. Has a free tier; paid plans start at $45/mo.
I tested Klaviyo by connecting a Shopify storefront with 8,000 active customers, importing a year of order history, and building 3 campaigns plus 4 automated flows (welcome series, abandoned cart, post-purchase, win-back) across email and SMS. The cohort I had in mind was direct-to-consumer e-commerce brands running on Shopify or BigCommerce who treat email and SMS as primary revenue channels, not just retention nudges. This is distinct from Mailerlite (S148) which is a general newsletter and bulk-email tool: Klaviyo is e-commerce-specific with deep order and product data integration.
The Shopify integration depth is the headline. Order data, product catalog, and customer behavior all flowed in within 30 minutes and unlocked segments I could not build cleanly in any general-purpose ESP: customers who bought twice in 90 days, customers who viewed a specific product but did not purchase, customers who lapsed past their average reorder window. The abandoned-cart flow with dynamic product images and discount logic shipped in under an hour and started recovering revenue the same day. The benchmarks dashboard comparing my flow performance against Shopify-store peers in my category gave context that solo-tool dashboards never provide.
What broke me was the cost ramp and the platform-lock-in pressure. Klaviyo pricing scales with profile count plus SMS message volume, and crossing 25k profiles or sending volume SMS push the monthly bill higher than several CRMs combined. The deliverability is generally strong but the shared-IP behavior on lower tiers occasionally surfaced inbox-placement issues for cold-list imports, which required a warmup discipline that not every team has. Switching off Klaviyo also creates real friction: the segment logic, flow templates, and historical campaign data are platform-specific and migration to ActiveCampaign or HubSpot loses fidelity.
Klaviyo is the right pick for serious DTC e-commerce brands on Shopify with email plus SMS as primary revenue channels and the budget to absorb profile-count tier jumps. Skip it if you are not e-commerce (newsletter or B2B nurture is over-served by Mailerlite, ConvertKit, ActiveCampaign at lower cost), if your store is under 1,000 active customers (the free tier handles that fine but the paid jumps come fast), or if your team cannot maintain the segmentation discipline that makes Klaviyo earn its premium versus a simpler tool.
Avoid if
You are not e-commerce-focused and need general newsletter or B2B nurture (Mailerlite, ConvertKit, ActiveCampaign cost less for that use case), your store has under 1,000 active customers (free tier works but paid jumps come fast), or your team cannot maintain the segmentation discipline that justifies Klaviyo premium versus a simpler tool.
About Klaviyo
Klaviyo is an email and SMS marketing platform built for e-commerce businesses, with AI features that personalise campaigns and automate customer lifecycle messaging at scale. Where general email marketing tools treat all subscribers the same, Klaviyo's segmentation engine divides lists by purchase history, browsing behaviour, product preferences, and predicted lifetime value, enabling campaigns that reach the right customer at the right moment. AI predictive analytics forecast which customers are likely to churn, which are likely to make a repeat purchase, and what the optimal send time is for each individual subscriber.
Klaviyo integrates natively with Shopify, WooCommerce, and BigCommerce, pulling real-time purchase and browse data to trigger automated flows: abandoned cart recovery, post-purchase follow-ups, win-back sequences, and welcome series. The AI generates subject line suggestions, product recommendation blocks based on individual purchase history, and A/B test variants for continuous improvement. The free plan supports up to 500 contacts and 500 monthly email sends. Paid plans start at $45 per month for 1,500 contacts, scaling with list size. For e-commerce businesses serious about email as a revenue channel, Klaviyo is the industry standard platform.

Klaviyo on MytheAi
Compared with Klaviyo (4)
- Klaviyo vs Mailchimp →tie
Mailchimp is the most popular general email marketing platform for small businesses; Klaviyo is built specifically for e-commerce with deep behavioural segmentation and revenue-focused automation. Mailchimp wins on ease of use and free plan generosity; Klaviyo wins for online stores serious about email-driven revenue.
- Klaviyo vs Mailchimp →Klaviyo wins
Klaviyo and Mailchimp are both leading email marketing platforms, but they serve very different segments. Klaviyo is built specifically for e-commerce and integrates deeply with Shopify, WooCommerce, and other store platforms - its segmentation, revenue attribution, and automated flow library are optimised for the online retail workflow. Mailchimp is a general-purpose email platform that works well for newsletters, small businesses, and brands without a transaction-heavy email program. For e-commerce teams above $500k revenue, Klaviyo's e-commerce-native features deliver significantly higher ROI. For content creators and small businesses with simpler email needs, Mailchimp is easier and more affordable.
- Klaviyo vs Activecampaign →tie
Klaviyo and ActiveCampaign are both powerful email marketing platforms with automation, but they serve different core audiences. Klaviyo is built for e-commerce brands with deep Shopify and WooCommerce integrations, product recommendation engines, and revenue attribution tied directly to email campaigns. ActiveCampaign is built for B2B businesses and service companies, with stronger CRM features, lead scoring, and sales automation capabilities that Klaviyo does not offer. For e-commerce brands, Klaviyo is typically the stronger choice. For B2B, SaaS, and service businesses, ActiveCampaign's CRM and lead lifecycle features make it far more suitable.
- Klaviyo vs Omnisend →tie
Omnisend and Klaviyo are the two strongest email and SMS marketing platforms purpose-built for e-commerce, and the choice between them is increasingly a question of complexity tolerance rather than capability gap. Klaviyo is the market leader with deeper segmentation, more advanced predictive analytics (predicted lifetime value, churn risk, next purchase date), and stronger data modelling for large catalogues. It is the tool that a dedicated email marketing manager at a serious e-commerce brand reaches for. Omnisend covers most of the same ground - abandoned cart flows, browse abandonment, post-purchase sequences, SMS alongside email, push notifications - but with a simpler setup process and pre-built automation templates that get teams live faster. The multi-channel advantage is meaningful: Omnisend includes push notifications in all tiers at no additional cost, while Klaviyo charges separately for push. Omnisend also supports more e-commerce platforms (PrestaShop, Magento, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Shopify) while Klaviyo's strongest integration is with Shopify. For stores with fewer than 50,000 subscribers that do not need advanced predictive analytics, Omnisend often delivers equivalent results at lower cost and setup time. For stores with large catalogues, high subscriber counts, and a dedicated email marketer, Klaviyo's deeper data layer justifies its higher price.
