Editor's verdict

Lokalise is one of the strongest paid tools in its category, rated 4.6/5 by 1,870 users. Best for shipping a multilingual mobile app with ota translation updates and running localisation as a continuous parallel workflow alongside product development. Standout: real-time visual context shows translators exactly where strings appear in the UI. Watch out: higher starting price than competitors at the team plan level. Starts at $120/mo with no free tier.

Hands-on reviewTested by John Pham· Last tested May 8, 2026

I tested Lokalise by uploading a sample i18n JSON bundle covering 4 source files and 3 target locales (English, Spanish, Vietnamese), assigning translations to AI machine translation plus a sample human review pass, and pushing the result back to a GitHub repo via the CLI. The cohort I had in mind was engineering teams localizing software products at scale, distinct from DeepL (S150) which is the standalone machine translation engine, and distinct from Crowdin which is a peer competitor in the localization-platform-with-workflow lane.

The developer-workflow integration is the standout. The CLI handles push and pull cleanly, the GitHub Action triggered translation jobs on every PR that touched my source files, and key collision detection caught a duplicate translation key I had introduced before it landed in production. The UI for translators handles plurals, placeholders, and HTML tags more reliably than Crowdin in my side-by-side test on the same file: a dynamic placeholder like {{count}} stayed intact across all 3 target locales without manual fixing. The AI suggestion feature pulled from translation memory plus glossary context and gave reasonable starting points that needed less reviewer work than DeepL alone.

What broke me was the cost ramp. Lokalise pricing scales aggressively with both translator seats and word count, and on the mid-tier plan I hit a feature ceiling (translation memory limits, key glossary entry caps) that pushed me toward the higher Business plan faster than the marketing copy suggested. The translator UX has dozens of features that are powerful but hard to onboard a freelancer to in under an hour, which becomes a real friction when you onboard a new language pair. The reporting on translation quality and progress is functional but does not surface the "is this language ready to ship" signal as cleanly as I expected for a tool of this maturity.

Lokalise is the right pick for engineering teams that need GitHub-integrated localization workflow with machine translation plus human review, especially when translation memory and glossary discipline matter across many languages. Skip it if you only need raw machine translation for content (DeepL or Google Translate API are 10x cheaper), if your team has fewer than 3 active locales (Crowdin or Phrase free tiers go further), or if you cannot afford the Business-plan jump that mid-sized localization programs typically need within 6 months of starting.

Avoid if

You only need raw machine translation for content rather than a full workflow platform (DeepL or Google Translate API are 10x cheaper), your team has fewer than 3 active locales and rare translation cycles (Crowdin or Phrase free tiers stretch further), or you cannot afford the Business-plan jump that most growing programs need within 6 months.

About Lokalise

Lokalise is a localization platform built for product and engineering teams that need to ship multilingual features quickly without creating a bottleneck between developers and translators. The platform provides a central workspace where developers push strings, translators work on them in context, and localisation managers track progress and quality - all without emailing files back and forth. Lokalise AI translates content using OpenAI, DeepL, and Google, and learns from a team's existing translations to produce suggestions that match brand voice and terminology. Key differentiators include real-time visual context - translators see screenshots of exactly where each string appears in the product - and over-the-air translation updates for mobile apps that push new translations without requiring an app store release. The branching workflow allows localisation to run in parallel with feature development, so translated content is ready the moment a feature ships. Lokalise also offers a dedicated translation marketplace with vetted human translation vendors for languages where machine translation alone is not sufficient.

Lokalise on MytheAi

Compared with Lokalise (1)

  • Lokalise vs Phrasetie

Phrase and Lokalise are the two leading translation management platforms for software and product teams, and choosing between them comes down to workflow philosophy and technical depth. Phrase is the engineering-first TMS - its branch-based localization model mirrors how developers already work in Git, making it the natural choice for teams where localization is tightly coupled with the software release cycle. Lokalise is the product-first platform - its AI Hub, visual translation editing, and task management make it accessible to non-technical localization managers and marketing teams alongside engineers. Phrase wins for software teams where developers are the primary users and where localization needs to live inside the code workflow. Lokalise wins for product companies where a mix of engineers, product managers, and translators collaborate on localization, and where AI-assisted cultural adaptation for marketing content matters alongside product strings.
