Editor's verdict

Mailchimp is a solid freemium pick, rated 4.2/5 by 2,800 users. Best for small business newsletters and product launch campaigns. Standout: generous free plan (500 contacts). Watch out: gets expensive as list grows. Has a free tier; paid plans start at $13/mo.

Hands-on reviewTested by John Pham· Last tested May 15, 2026

Tested Mailchimp over five weeks running a 4,800-contact newsletter list, two welcome automations, and an e-commerce abandoned cart sequence for a Shopify store doing roughly 80 K USD monthly. Baseline was Klaviyo for the e-commerce side and a previous ConvertKit setup for the newsletter side. Wanted to see whether the AI Content Generator and recent e-commerce push were enough to consolidate both workflows into Mailchimp for a single bill and single login.

Drag-and-drop builder is still the cleanest in the category for non-technical marketers - shipped a holiday campaign in 22 minutes including image edits. The AI Content Generator drafted serviceable subject lines and preview text, and roughly 60 percent shipped without rewrite. Free tier accommodating 500 contacts and 1,000 monthly sends is generous enough for early-stage validation. Reporting dashboard with open-rate heatmaps and click-tracking by content block helped diagnose two underperforming sections of a recurring newsletter. Standard automation logic for welcome sequences worked reliably across the test window.

E-commerce automations are visibly weaker than Klaviyo on the same Shopify data - segmentation rules around browse behavior, predicted lifetime value, and product-affinity events feel one generation behind and required workarounds I would not need in Klaviyo. Pricing scales aggressively with audience count, and pricing tiers around contact deduplication penalize lists with multiple touchpoints. Deliverability dipped noticeably on a cold prospect list import compared to my previous ConvertKit run on the same data. Segmentation builder for behavioral cohorts is clunky next to Klaviyo flows, and tag management above 200 tags becomes a maintenance burden.

Still the right answer for content-led brands, newsletters under 10K subscribers, and teams that prioritize ease of use over deep behavioral targeting. Klaviyo wins clearly for any serious Shopify e-commerce automation. Customer.io is the pick when true behavioral triggering matters. Pick Mailchimp for content-first sending and broad newsletter operations where simplicity outweighs depth.

Avoid if

Shopify operators doing more than 20 K USD monthly will leave revenue on the table compared to Klaviyo flows. Teams who need product-affinity segmentation, predicted-CLV cohorts, or browse-behavior triggering should not start here. SaaS companies with event-driven lifecycle requirements get more from Customer.io or Braze instead.

About Mailchimp

Mailchimp is the world's largest email marketing platform, used by over 12 million businesses to send newsletters, automated campaigns, and transactional emails. Its AI tools have matured significantly: the Content Optimizer suggests improvements to subject lines and body copy, predicted send times automatically choose the best moment to reach each subscriber, and the AI-assisted campaign builder generates email copy from a brief description of your goals. For small businesses and creators, Mailchimp's free plan supports up to 500 contacts and 1,000 monthly sends - enough to run a legitimate email marketing operation before committing to a paid plan. The segmentation and automation features let you build customer journeys that trigger on behaviour: purchases, page visits, or subscription milestones. The template library covers every use case from product announcements to drip sequences, and the analytics dashboard shows open rates, click-through rates, and revenue attribution clearly. While tools like Klaviyo have overtaken Mailchimp for e-commerce-heavy use cases, Mailchimp remains the most accessible starting point for businesses running their first email campaigns.

Mailchimp on MytheAi

Compared with Mailchimp (4)

  • Mailchimp vs Beehiivtie

Mailchimp is the established email marketing giant; Beehiiv is the modern newsletter platform built for creators and audience monetisation. Beehiiv wins for newsletter-first publishers; Mailchimp wins for businesses with complex automation needs.

  • Mailchimp vs Klaviyotie

Mailchimp is the most popular general email marketing platform for small businesses; Klaviyo is built specifically for e-commerce with deep behavioural segmentation and revenue-focused automation. Mailchimp wins on ease of use and free plan generosity; Klaviyo wins for online stores serious about email-driven revenue.

  • Mailchimp vs KlaviyoKlaviyo wins

Klaviyo and Mailchimp are both leading email marketing platforms, but they serve very different segments. Klaviyo is built specifically for e-commerce and integrates deeply with Shopify, WooCommerce, and other store platforms - its segmentation, revenue attribution, and automated flow library are optimised for the online retail workflow. Mailchimp is a general-purpose email platform that works well for newsletters, small businesses, and brands without a transaction-heavy email program. For e-commerce teams above $500k revenue, Klaviyo's e-commerce-native features deliver significantly higher ROI. For content creators and small businesses with simpler email needs, Mailchimp is easier and more affordable.

  • Mailchimp vs MailerliteMailerlite wins

Mailerlite and Mailchimp compete directly for small businesses, freelancers, and newsletter creators who need a reliable email marketing platform without the complexity of Klaviyo or ActiveCampaign. The comparison has shifted significantly in Mailerlite's favour over the past two years as Mailchimp has raised prices and Mailerlite has expanded its feature set. Mailerlite now includes a landing page builder, website builder, pop-up builder, digital product selling, and a paid newsletter subscription feature - all at a price point that undercuts Mailchimp at most subscriber tiers. Mailchimp retains advantages in integrations (300+ vs Mailerlite's smaller but growing library), brand recognition that some clients and partners find reassuring, and a slightly more polished drag-and-drop editor. Both offer AI writing assistance, send-time optimisation, and A/B testing. The decision between them is increasingly straightforward: if you are starting fresh or switching platforms, Mailerlite's combination of price, feature breadth, and clean interface is the better default for most small businesses. Mailchimp is easier to justify if you need a specific integration Mailerlite does not support, or if you are already on Mailchimp and the switching cost does not justify the savings.
