I tested Mem by importing 18 months of meeting notes, project documents, and personal journal entries (about 800 notes total) from a prior Notion workspace, then ran the daily-capture and AI-search workflows over two weeks. Compared the auto-organization and AI-recall surfaces against Obsidian (S155) which I had been using as primary PKM, and against Notion AI for collaborative knowledge work. The cohort I had in mind was knowledge workers wanting AI-first note-taking with auto-organization rather than the manual-tagging and folder-discipline that Obsidian and Notion expect, distinct from Obsidian (local-first markdown PKM with strong plugin ecosystem) and from Notion AI (workspace-first cloud collaboration).

The AI-search and auto-organization surface is the actual product. Asking "what did we decide about the pricing experiment in March" returned the right meeting note plus the followup decision in a Slack thread that had been auto-saved, with citations to source notes, in under 3 seconds. The "related notes" panel surfaced connections I had not made manually: a journal entry from 6 months ago referencing a vendor I had just researched in a separate fresh thread. The capture-anywhere model with mobile, browser extension, and email forwarding kept the friction of "I should write this down" down to zero. Smart Write that drafts a follow-up email or summary based on a meeting note worked acceptably well as a starting draft.

What broke me was the lock-in concern and the PKM-graph weakness compared to Obsidian. Mem stores notes in its own cloud database with proprietary structure: exporting to markdown is supported but loses the AI-derived metadata and connection graph that gave Mem its primary value. The forced AI-first workflow felt impressive in the first week but anti-pattern by week three: I missed the deliberate folder structure and bidirectional linking discipline that Obsidian enforces, which compounds into a longer-term knowledge graph rather than just a smarter inbox. Pricing at 15 dollars per month is reasonable for active users but the value proposition erodes if you are not heavily using the AI features that justify the cost over a free plain-markdown Obsidian setup.

Mem is the right pick for knowledge workers who explicitly want AI-first capture with auto-organization and value the smart-search experience over manual-PKM discipline. Skip it if you want long-term portable note ownership without vendor lock-in (Obsidian local markdown is better for that), if you value a deliberate folder + tag + bidirectional-link discipline as the structuring force (Obsidian rewards that more deeply), or if your collaborative workspace needs are heavy (Notion remains stronger for team workspaces with shared docs).
