Microsoft Teams

I tested Microsoft Teams on a free Microsoft 365 personal tenant during a two-week sprint that overlapped with peer-doubling Slack from session 166. The setup intent was head-to-head: same five collaborators, same project, same channels-vs-teams mapping, see which one I wanted to live in. Teams installed via the Windows native app and felt heavier on first launch than Slack desktop, but the integration with Outlook calendar and OneDrive was the differentiator I came back to repeatedly.

What worked was the depth of the Microsoft 365 fabric. Sending a meeting invite from Outlook auto-created a Teams call link, attaching a file shared it from OneDrive without a separate upload step, and the meeting recording landed in Stream where transcript search worked across multiple past calls. The Teams app handled voice and video at higher fidelity than Slack huddles in my mediocre wifi tests, with screen-sharing showing crisp text on a 4K monitor instead of compressed pixels. Threading inside channels stayed readable once I disabled the default activity-feed firehose.

What broke was discoverability. The sidebar lumps Teams and Channels with no obvious search until you learn the slash commands, and finding an old conversation took multiple clicks even though the message was indexed. Notifications fired duplicated alerts between desktop and mobile on the same Microsoft account. The Apps tab surfaced enterprise integrations that needed admin approval, which made the free tier feel artificially gated compared to Slack where third-party connectors install in two clicks.

Verdict: Teams wins if your work already lives in Microsoft 365 because the Outlook plus OneDrive plus Stream plus Teams integration loop is genuinely seamless. Slack wins for SMB and startup teams where third-party SaaS sprawl is the daily reality.
