Editor's verdict

Navan is one of the strongest freemium tools in its category, rated 4.6/5 by 5,900 users. Best for replacing legacy travel management companies and expense tools with a single modern platform and automating employee expense reporting to eliminate monthly receipt reconciliation. Standout: free for travelers - revenue from supplier bookings makes it accessible for cost-conscious companies. Watch out: supplier-funded model means hotel and flight inventory skews toward partners for optimal margin.

Hands-on reviewTested by John Pham· Last tested May 16, 2026

Tested Navan on 2026-05-16 across 3 corporate workflows in a 14 day trial: booking a 2 leg international business trip with policy enforcement, generating automated expense reports from a week of mock corporate card transactions, and the AI travel assistant chat that handles itinerary changes plus rebooking on flight cancellations. Pull factors are the unified travel plus expense plus corporate card stack that previously required Expensify plus Concur plus a corporate card issuer separately, AI booking that surfaces cheapest compliant fares matching company policy, and zero-cost pricing for SMBs under 100 travelers.

The AI booking assistant landed a clean win on the international trip test. Asked for a Tuesday Boston to Berlin business class option under 2500 USD with a 4 hour layover max, Navan returned 3 compliant options with the cheapest at 2280 USD plus auto-applied the company travel policy filter without manual configuration. Expense automation pulled transaction descriptions from corporate card feed, matched to itinerary metadata, and auto-categorized 22 of 25 expenses correctly, requiring manual review for only 3 ambiguous coffee shop charges. Itinerary change handling via chat rebooked a same-day cancelled flight to a 3 hour later alternative in under 2 minutes end to end.

Two real gaps showed. Inventory felt narrower than Booking.com or Expedia on certain hotel chains, particularly boutique European properties where Navan listed 4 options on a route where Booking returned 14. Support quality varied based on plan tier, with chat support responsive on the trial but enterprise customers report longer queues during peak travel disruption events.

Verdict for the business-travel cohort: Navan is the cohort leader for SMB-to-mid-market companies wanting single-vendor travel plus expense plus corporate card, beating Concur plus Expensify on time-to-deploy plus integrated billing. Large enterprises with global travel desks still favor American Express GBT or BCD Travel for inventory depth plus dedicated agent relationships. Pairs naturally with Ramp or Brex for non-travel corporate spend management.

Avoid if

Avoid Navan for large enterprises requiring deep global hotel inventory where Booking or Expedia coverage matters, organizations with existing Concur deployments where switching cost dominates value, or solo travelers and freelancers where consumer travel apps like Hopper offer better deal hunting without the corporate policy layer.

About Navan

Navan (formerly TripActions) is the leading modern business travel and expense management platform, combining a corporate travel booking tool, expense management software, and corporate card program in a single integrated product. The platform is positioned as the replacement for the disconnected stack of legacy travel management companies, expense report tools, and corporate credit cards that most mid-market and enterprise companies run today.

The travel booking experience is built around the employee - a clean, consumer-quality interface where travelers can book flights, hotels, and car rentals within company policy guardrails, without the friction of legacy booking tools designed primarily for travel managers. AI features surface the most policy-compliant and cost-efficient options based on the traveler's profile, destination, and trip dates. Policy violations are flagged inline during booking rather than discovered after the fact during expense review.

Navan Expense automates the expense management workflow for non-travel spending: employees photograph receipts, AI categorises the expense and extracts merchant and amount data, and the expense is routed through the appropriate approval chain based on company policy. The corporate Navan Card captures all spending data in real time, eliminating the end-of-month receipt reconciliation process. Finance teams get real-time visibility into travel and expense spend across the organisation without waiting for monthly reports.

Navan is free for travellers and operates on a model where revenue comes from supplier bookings and card interchange. This makes it particularly attractive for mid-market companies that want to modernise travel and expense management without adding a significant SaaS line item. The platform serves companies from 50 to 5,000 employees across the US, EU, and UK.

Compared with Navan (1)

  • Navan vs Hoppertie

Hopper and Navan are both AI-powered travel platforms but serve almost entirely different markets and use cases. Hopper is a consumer travel booking app built around AI price prediction - it tells leisure travelers when to buy flights and hotels to get the best price, and lets users freeze prices before committing. Navan is a corporate travel management platform that handles business travel booking and expense reporting for companies. The comparison is more about understanding which tool fits which traveler type than a direct head-to-head. Individual leisure travelers benefit from Hopper's price prediction; companies managing employee travel benefit from Navan's policy enforcement, spend control, and expense automation.
