Editor's verdict

Readwise is one of the strongest freemium tools in its category, rated 4.6/5 by 512 users. Best for building a searchable library of highlights across all reading and retaining key insights from books and research papers. Standout: aggregates highlights from Kindle, Pocket, Instapaper in one place. Watch out: reader app is separate from the core highlights product. Has a free tier; paid plans start at $8/mo.

Hands-on reviewTested by John Pham· Last tested May 8, 2026

I tested Readwise by importing 4 years of highlights from a Kindle library (about 2,800 highlights across 90 books), connecting Twitter saves, Instapaper bookmarks, and a Pocket export to consolidate reading captures, and running the daily-review and weekly-digest flows for two weeks. The cohort I had in mind was avid readers, researchers, and knowledge workers building a long-term personal commonplace book of highlights and notes, distinct from Obsidian (S155) which is the broader PKM where Readwise highlights might land and from Mem.ai which is more freeform AI note-taking.

The spaced-repetition daily-review surface is the actual product. Receiving 5-15 randomly resurfaced highlights every morning genuinely re-encountered ideas I had forgotten 2 years ago, and several reading-list decisions traced back to a resurfaced highlight that prompted "I should re-read that book". The export ecosystem to Notion, Obsidian, Roam, and Logseq is mature: every highlight syncs into a daily-notes structure with metadata intact, which is the workflow primitive that turns Readwise from a standalone app into a connective layer between reading and writing tools. The Reader app for read-it-later (the newer Readwise Reader product) handles articles, PDFs, ebooks, and YouTube transcripts in one inbox-style queue with highlighting plus AI-generated key-points summaries.

What surprised me was how Reader and core Readwise feel like two products at different maturity levels under one subscription. Core Readwise (highlight import + daily review + sync) is rock-solid and has been refined for years. Reader (the read-it-later side) has shipped fast but still has rough edges: PDF rendering on complex layouts breaks, the YouTube-transcript flow occasionally captures the wrong language, and the AI-summary feature hallucinates on technical content I knew well enough to spot. The pricing combined is reasonable for active readers but feels expensive if you mostly use one half of the bundle.

Readwise is the right pick for active readers who want highlights to actually compound through spaced repetition into a long-term commonplace book, especially when paired with a downstream PKM tool like Obsidian or Notion. Skip it if you read fewer than 1 book per month (the daily-review surface needs volume to be valuable), if you do not export to a downstream PKM (the highlights stay siloed and lose the connective value), or if you want primarily a read-it-later tool without highlights (Pocket or Instapaper free tiers cover that).

Avoid if

You read fewer than 1 book per month (daily-review surface needs volume to be valuable), you do not export to a downstream PKM tool like Obsidian or Notion (highlights stay siloed and lose connective value), or you want primarily a read-it-later tool without highlights (Pocket or Instapaper free tiers cover that use case).

About Readwise

Readwise is an AI-powered reading tool that helps you retain and reconnect with everything you read across books, articles, newsletters, podcasts, and PDFs. It aggregates highlights from Kindle, Instapaper, Pocket, and web articles into a single library, then resurfaces them via daily digests and a spaced repetition review system. The Readwise Reader app adds full-featured read-it-later functionality with AI summarization, note-taking, and document-level chat directly in the reading view. Knowledge workers, researchers, and avid readers use Readwise to build a searchable, annotated library of everything they consume online. The AI can summarize documents, answer questions about a book based on your highlights, and surface related notes across your entire reading history. For professionals who read extensively but struggle to act on what they learn, Readwise bridges the gap between passive reading and active knowledge retention. The tool pairs well with note-taking systems like Obsidian, Notion, and Roam Research via native export integrations.
