I tested Roam Research as a personal knowledge graph for academic literature notes plus daily journaling, with Anytype S165 (local-first) and Tana S164 (typed knowledge) already in the rotation. Roam was the original product that popularized bidirectional linking and the second-brain movement, so the question was whether the 15 USD per month price still earns its place in 2026 against free alternatives like Obsidian and Logseq.

What worked best was the cumulative value of double-bracket wikilinks over time. After 3 weeks of daily notes, the backlinks panel started surfacing connections between papers I had read in different months that genuinely changed my synthesis. Block references let me cite the same factual claim in 5 different notes without copy-paste duplication, and editing the source block updated all references. The daily notes page as the default landing surface created a low-friction journaling habit - I wrote more consistently than in any prior tool. The query language (basic Datalog) surfaced unexpected connections like which papers cite the same primary source, which is the kind of structural insight no flat note app delivers.

What broke or surprised: web-only is a bigger problem than the marketing admits. The PWA caching is partial, so working on a 2000-plus note database on a slow connection felt laggy and full offline mode does not really exist. The 15 USD per month with no free tier (just a 31-day trial) felt steep next to Obsidian zero-cost local-first plus Logseq open-source as direct competitors. The 2021 and 2022 outage history still affects my trust signal when I think about putting years of research notes in one cloud-only system. Learning curve was real - took roughly 2 weeks to internalize the wiki-link mental model versus 2 hours for Notion.

Verdict in cohort: Roam Research for committed researchers building cumulative knowledge graphs over years where bidirectional linking depth is the primary value. Anytype S165 for privacy-focused users who want local-first plus encryption. Tana S164 for typed structured knowledge where every node has a defined schema. Pick Roam when the unit of work is the link, Anytype when the unit is ownership, Tana when the unit is structure.
