Character and object consistency across shots is where Sora quietly leads. On a 3-shot sequence where the same protagonist needs to reappear in different framings, Sora preserves face, clothing, and environmental details more reliably than Runway Gen-3 or Kling on the same prompt. For storyboard-driven narrative work or any video that needs continuity across cuts, this single attribute is decisive.

Storyboard mode (the panel-by-panel timeline interface) is the second feature I underestimated. Setting up a 4-panel storyboard with prompts and durations per panel produces a 20-second composite that feels like one continuous take instead of 4 stitched clips. The same workflow in Runway requires manual chaining and visible cuts; Sora handles the transitions natively.

Where Sora falls short: the default 5-second clip length feels short (extendable but quality drops past 12 seconds), the ChatGPT Plus quota of roughly 50 priority generations per month is restrictive for heavy work (Pro at $200/mo unlocks unlimited but the price jump is steep), the content policy is strict (no real people, celebrities, or copyrighted characters at all), peak-hour queue times stretch to 20+ minutes on Plus, and aesthetic quality on stylized prompts (anime, watercolor, claymation) lags Runway Gen-3 or Kling.

For continuity-heavy narrative work where character consistency matters, Sora is the right default if you already pay for ChatGPT Plus. For one-off high-quality short clips with maximum aesthetic control, Runway Gen-3 or Veo 3 may serve better.
