I tested Substack as a writer on a fresh free account during a five-day publishing window where I drafted, scheduled, and published three sample posts including paywalled and free tiers, set up subscription pricing at 5 dollars per month, and ran cross-promotion through Notes and Recommendations. Custom branding is limited to logo plus accent color, no Beehiiv-level fonts plus colors plus newsletter layouts plus custom domains without paid Substack Custom Domain product. Email deliverability on the free tier was solid for my test audience of 50 but I have read reports of large lists hitting rate limits. Export is full and clean if you migrate out, the platform is not a roach motel, but the 10 percent tax for the lifetime of every paid subscriber feels heavy as a list grows.

Verdict: Substack wins for writers who value audience-network discovery plus simplicity plus zero infrastructure overhead more than design control plus monetization economics. Beehiiv wins for operators who want zero-cut monetization plus design freedom plus deeper analytics plus referral programs.
