Tana

Tested Tana over four weeks rebuilding a personal knowledge base of roughly 2,800 notes and migrating a project task system from Notion. Baseline was Notion for project pages, Obsidian for personal markdown notes, and Mem AI as a recent experiment in AI-augmented note synthesis. Wanted to validate Tana supertags as a unifying primitive across notes, tasks, and people, plus the AI command surface for synthesis and recall against a real corpus.

Supertags genuinely change how knowledge gets structured - typing a node as person or project or meeting automatically gave it the right fields and view contexts, and the typed graph started producing useful queries by week two. The AI command for synthesis across selected nodes worked reliably for weekly review prep, producing a one-page rollup of project status across nine workstreams that would have taken roughly 40 minutes manually. Calendar integration showing meeting nodes inline with daily notes felt natural. Search across typed nodes is faster and more precise than Notion search by a wide margin once supertags are in place.

Steep learning curve is real and was the main risk during onboarding - took roughly five hours of deliberate practice before supertags felt natural, and one collaborator never crossed that threshold. No offline mode is a hard limitation for travel and unreliable network situations - lost work twice when the connection dropped mid-edit. Mobile app feels secondary to desktop, with field editing on supertagged nodes occasionally laggy. Pricing at the Pro tier of 14 USD monthly is steep relative to Obsidian Sync at 4 USD or Notion Personal Pro. Database export options are limited compared to Notion, and full data portability felt incomplete.

Best for systems thinkers and operators who want one typed system spanning notes, tasks, and people with AI synthesis built in. Mem AI is faster for pure note-taking with AI on top and lower learning curve. Obsidian and Logseq remain the right call for markdown-first workflows with offline guarantees. Notion fits teams who want collaborative docs more than typed graphs. Pick Tana when the typed knowledge graph is the actual job.
