I tested Zed as the code editor for a Rust plus TypeScript backend project, comparing it to Cursor S133, Codeium S141, and Helix for the same job. Typing latency on Zed felt physically faster than Cursor or VS Code on the same machine - the GPU rendering plus Rust implementation make every keystroke feel instant in a way that becomes obvious after 1 day of side-by-side use. Multi-cursor plus vim mode plus tree-sitter syntax handling worked across Rust plus TS plus Python in the test project without configuration friction. Built-in collaborative editing (channels plus shared workspaces plus voice chat) let me pair-program with a remote collaborator directly inside the editor without spinning up Tuple plus VS Code Live Share. The AI assistant integration (Anthropic Claude plus OpenAI plus Ollama local) handled inline completions plus chat plus refactor commands at quality similar to Cursor with slightly different UX (more keyboard-driven, less popup-driven).

What broke or surprised: extension ecosystem is roughly 1 percent the size of VS Code - critical tools like specific linters plus custom snippets plus framework-specific extensions are missing or community-maintained in early state. Built-in AI assistant requires bringing your own API key (no included credit on free tier), so heavy use racks up Anthropic plus OpenAI bills separately. macOS native plus Linux beta plus Windows alpha means Windows users get a noticeably less stable experience. Some VS Code muscle memory does not transfer (different keybindings by default), 1-week adjustment period. Project navigation features (jump to symbol, find references) work but search-and-replace across multi-file projects lags VS Code with rg integration.

Verdict in cohort: Zed for performance-sensitive developers on macOS or Linux who value latency plus collaborative-by-default editing plus vim-flavored keyboard workflow, willing to pay for AI API usage separately. Cursor S133 for the most polished AI-first editing experience plus widest model support plus VS Code extension ecosystem. Codeium S141 for free AI completions on top of existing VS Code or JetBrains. Replit S170 for browser-based collaborative coding. Copilot Microsoft S141 for the safest enterprise integration. Pick Zed when latency matters more than ecosystem breadth.
