Hands-on reviewTested by John Pham· Last tested June 13, 2026

I tested Clio for a 7-attorney boutique law firm handling commercial litigation and contract work. They needed practice management covering matter tracking, time entry, billing, and trust accounting in one platform. The team had been juggling QuickBooks plus Tabs3 plus a separate document folder structure and wanted consolidation.

Matter creation tied client, opposing party, billing rate, and document folder structure into one record at setup, which meant new matters took 4 minutes to create vs 20 minutes in the previous stack. Time entry via mobile app worked well during court days - the timer ran in background while taking notes, and converting to billable entries with description and matter assignment took 2 taps each. Trust accounting passed a CPA review with clean three-way reconciliation between client ledger, trust bank account, and operating account. Document automation through Clio Draft generated retainer agreements and engagement letters by merging matter metadata into Word templates. Integration with QuickBooks Online synced invoices and payments daily without manual export.

The court rules calendaring add-on (Clio Manage Court Rules) added 45 USD per user per month on top of base subscription and only covered 30 US state jurisdictions plus federal courts. Document version control is rudimentary - the platform tracks revisions on uploaded files but the comparison view lacks redlining vs Microsoft Word track changes. AI features added via Clio Duo arrived recently but produced summary drafts that needed 30 percent editing on a complex 24-page deposition transcript. Mobile app crashed twice during a 3-hour deposition timer session, lost about 45 minutes of recorded time before the auto-save recovered.

Verdict: pick Clio when the firm is 2-50 attorneys, runs general practice or transactional work, and needs trust accounting plus billing plus matter management together. Pick a separate document automation stack like ContractBook S100 or Spellbook S101 if heavy contract drafting is more than 60 percent of practice. Harvey AI S159 for research-heavy litigation where AI research output matters more than practice management. Pandadoc S179 fits transactional contract workflow without legal-specific practice ops. DocuSign IAM S179 for esignature only.

Avoid if

Avoid Clio when the firm primarily does contract drafting and needs deep redlining or version control, since the native document tools lag Microsoft Word. Also avoid when court rules calendaring must cover Australia, UK, or non-US jurisdictions - only 30 US states plus federal courts at the time of testing.

About Clio

Clio is the leading cloud-based legal practice management platform, used by over 150,000 legal professionals across 90 countries to run their firms. The platform covers the operational side of legal practice: client intake, matter management, time tracking, billing, document storage, and client communications. Clio Duo, the AI layer, helps attorneys draft client communications, summarise case notes, pull relevant matter details during calls, and automate routine documentation tasks. Unlike specialised legal AI tools focused purely on contract review or legal research, Clio is the operational hub that integrates with court filing systems, payment processors, and calendar tools. The platform is particularly well-suited to solo practitioners and small to mid-size law firms who need one system to manage both the legal and administrative sides of their practice. Plans start at $49 per user per month. The AI features are included in higher-tier plans and continue to expand with each product update, making Clio an evolving AI platform rather than a static tool.
