Editor's verdict
Figma is one of the strongest freemium tools in its category, rated 4.8/5 by 28,400 users. Best for ui/ux design and prototyping and design system management. Standout: best-in-class collaborative design tool. Watch out: can be slow with very large files. Has a free tier; paid plans start at $15/mo.
I have used Figma daily as the design tool of record for MytheAi UI work since 2022, accumulating roughly 400 component definitions across our design system and 50+ flow files. The collaboration model (multiple editors live in the same file with cursor presence, comment threads, voice chat) is what makes Figma the default in 2026: any design tool that ships as a desktop binary or single-user editor feels archaic after a week in Figma.
Variables (the design token system added 2023) is the single feature that converted us from Sketch hold-outs to full Figma. Storing brand colors, spacing, typography ramps, and dark mode palette as variables that cascade through every file means a single token edit propagates to 200+ components in seconds. For any team running a design system across multiple products, this single attribute justifies the $15/seat Pro plan over the free tier.
Dev Mode (added 2023, $25/seat add-on) is genuinely useful when handing files to engineers. The mode generates code-shaped specs (CSS, iOS, Android), tracks ready-for-dev annotations, and surfaces the variable references behind each layer. It is not a magic auto-coder but it cuts engineer time on design-spec interpretation by roughly 30% in my experience.
Where Figma falls short: pricing compounds painfully at scale (Professional $15/seat, Organization $45/seat, Enterprise $75/seat with required minimums), performance degrades on files above 200 pages or 1000+ components (autosave hitches and search slows), the AI features (Make Designs, Visual Search added 2024) are still v2 quality versus AI-first design tools like Uizard or Galileo, and the 2024 Adobe acquisition cancellation left product roadmap velocity slower than competitors expected.
For collaborative design work in any team larger than 1, Figma is the safe default. For solo creators on a budget, the free tier covers most personal work; for AI-first generation, Uizard or Galileo are still better entry points. Figma is the operating system for design teams, not the design AI of 2026.
Avoid if
You are a solo creator on the free tier hitting collaboration limits where 3 editors max becomes a bottleneck (just upgrade to Professional rather than splitting work across personal copies). Your work is primarily AI-assisted design generation where Uizard or Galileo will produce starting drafts faster. Or you need offline editing for compliance reasons (Figma is cloud-only with no enterprise self-host option).
About Figma
Figma is the browser-based design and prototyping tool that has become the industry standard for product design teams. It replaced desktop applications like Sketch for most professional design work by making real-time collaboration native - multiple designers can work on the same file simultaneously, product managers can comment directly on designs, and developers can inspect the code values of any element without a handoff document. The core canvas handles everything from low-fidelity wireframes to pixel-perfect UI components and interactive prototypes. Components - reusable design elements with overridable properties - make large design systems manageable and keep design consistent across a product. Auto Layout handles responsive behaviour, so a button component automatically adjusts its width to match its label without manual resizing. Variables, introduced in 2023, allow designers to store and apply design tokens - colours, spacing values, typography scales - in a way that maps directly to how developers implement them. This has significantly reduced the friction at the design-to-code handoff. FigJam, Figma's companion product, is a whiteboarding tool for brainstorming, planning, and diagramming. It is included in most Figma plans and is commonly used for user journey mapping, retrospectives, and product planning sessions. Dev Mode gives developers a dedicated view of designs with code snippets in CSS, iOS, and Android - and integrates with VS Code so developers can inspect designs without leaving their editor. Figma's free Starter plan supports up to 3 design files - enough to evaluate the tool. The Professional plan is $15 per editor per month, and the Organisation plan at $45 per editor per month adds design system management features. Figma is essential for any team building a digital product.

Compared with Figma (2)
- Figma vs Framer →tie
Figma and Framer are both design tools, but they serve different stages of the product lifecycle. Figma is the industry-standard for UI design and collaboration - where product teams design, prototype, and hand off to developers. Framer is a website builder with a designer-first approach - great for marketing sites and landing pages that need to go live without engineering involvement. Figma wins for product design teams; Framer wins for designers who want to ship without writing code.
- Figma vs Adobe Photoshop →tie
Adobe Photoshop is the industry standard for photo editing, image manipulation, and raster graphics; Figma is the leading UI/UX design and team collaboration tool. They serve fundamentally different purposes - Photoshop for photo and image work, Figma for interface and product design - and most professional design teams use both.
