The collaboration model (multiple editors live in the same file with cursor presence, comment threads, voice chat) is what makes Figma the default in 2026: any design tool that ships as a desktop binary or single-user editor feels archaic after a week in Figma.
Variables (the design token system added 2023) is the single feature that converted us from Sketch hold-outs to full Figma. Storing brand colors, spacing, typography ramps, and dark mode palette as variables that cascade through every file means a single token edit propagates to 200+ components in seconds. Dev Mode (added 2023, $25/seat add-on) is genuinely useful when handing files to engineers. It is not a magic auto-coder but it cuts engineer time on design-spec interpretation by roughly 30% in my experience.
Where Figma falls short: pricing compounds painfully at scale (Professional $15/seat, Organization $45/seat, Enterprise $75/seat with required minimums), performance degrades on files above 200 pages or 1000+ components (autosave hitches and search slows), the AI features (Make Designs, Visual Search added 2024) are still v2 quality versus AI-first design tools like Uizard or Galileo, and the 2024 Adobe acquisition cancellation left product roadmap velocity slower than competitors expected.
For collaborative design work in any team larger than 1, Figma is the safe default. For solo creators on a budget, the free tier covers most personal work; for AI-first generation, Uizard or Galileo are still better entry points. Figma is the operating system for design teams, not the design AI of 2026.
Avoid if
You are a solo creator on the free tier hitting collaboration limits where 3 editors max becomes a bottleneck (just upgrade to Professional rather than splitting work across personal copies). Your work is primarily AI-assisted design generation where Uizard or Galileo will produce starting drafts faster. Or you need offline editing for compliance reasons (Figma is cloud-only with no enterprise self-host option).
