Editor's verdict
Greenhouse is one of the strongest paid tools in its category, rated 4.5/5 by 2,841 users. Best for running structured hiring at mid-market and enterprise scale and building candidate pipelines before roles open via crm. Standout: structured hiring scorecards reduce interview bias. Watch out: enterprise pricing - not suitable for early-stage startups.
I tested Greenhouse by setting up a recruiting workflow for 3 open engineering roles, configuring a structured interview kit with scorecards and a 4-stage pipeline, integrating with LinkedIn Recruiter and Ashby Sourcing, and running 12 candidates through the funnel over two weeks. The cohort I had in mind was 100-1000 employee SaaS companies running structured interviewing with multiple recruiters and hiring managers, distinct from Rippling (S155) which is full HRIS plus payroll and from Lever or Ashby as direct ATS peer competitors.
The structured-interviewing discipline is the actual product. Forcing every interviewer to fill a scorecard before they can see feedback from other interviewers (the famous interview-debrief lock) consistently produced cleaner debrief conversations than the unstructured Slack-message interview process most companies actually run. The integration ecosystem is broad: candidate sourcing tools, video interview platforms, background-check vendors, offer-letter signature platforms all wire in cleanly. The reporting on funnel conversion (sourced -> screen -> onsite -> offer -> hire) by source surfaced that one of our paid sourcing channels was producing 4x the cost-per-hire of internal referrals, which became a budget reallocation conversation.
What surprised me was how dated the candidate-experience surface feels by 2026 standards. The candidate portal looks like a 2018 web app and lacks the polish of newer ATS like Ashby, which is a real recruiting handicap when senior candidates compare your application experience to peers. The pricing is also enterprise-only with no transparent tier and the per-employee or per-recruiter-seat model gets expensive fast for a company with 50+ hiring managers. The scorecard customization is powerful but the configuration UI is nested-deep enough that I spent 90 minutes tuning a kit that should have been 20 minutes, which is the kind of admin overhead that adds up across many roles.
Greenhouse is the right pick for 200+ employee companies committed to structured interviewing with dedicated recruiting operations, where the integration ecosystem and reporting depth earn the enterprise price. Skip it if you are under 50 employees and hiring fewer than 10 people per year (Ashby or Workable are dramatically cheaper at that scale), if candidate experience is your differentiator (newer ATS like Ashby look more modern), or if you do not have a recruiting-ops person who can own the configuration discipline (Greenhouse without ownership becomes another underused enterprise tool).
Avoid if
You are under 50 employees and hiring fewer than 10 people per year (Ashby or Workable cost a fraction at that scale), candidate experience is your differentiator and you need a polished modern application portal (newer ATS like Ashby feel less dated), or you do not have a dedicated recruiting-ops owner for configuration (Greenhouse without ownership becomes underused).
About Greenhouse
Greenhouse is a recruiting platform designed around structured hiring - the practice of defining evaluation criteria before sourcing begins, applying them consistently to every candidate, and removing bias from hiring decisions through process design rather than willpower. Every job opening in Greenhouse starts with a defined scorecard listing the competencies and skills required. Interviewers score candidates against the same criteria using the same scale. The result is a dataset that predicts which attributes correlate with high performance at your company over time. Greenhouse integrations connect to 450+ HR tools including Slack, LinkedIn, Workday, and BambooHR, making it the center of gravity for most enterprise recruiting stacks. The CRM features let recruiting teams nurture passive candidates with targeted content, tracking engagement before a role opens. Greenhouse is used by companies including HubSpot, Squarespace, and Airbnb. For teams that are serious about reducing bias, improving offer acceptance rates, and building a predictable hiring engine, Greenhouse is the most mature platform in the category.

Compared with Greenhouse (2)
- Greenhouse vs Lever →tie
Greenhouse and Lever are the two dominant mid-market ATS platforms, but they reflect fundamentally different philosophies. Greenhouse is built around structured hiring - defining scorecards before sourcing begins and applying them consistently to reduce bias. Lever combines ATS and CRM into one platform, treating every candidate as a future hire or future customer. Choose Greenhouse for process discipline; Lever for candidate relationship depth.
- Greenhouse vs Ashby →tie
Ashby and Greenhouse are both serious ATS platforms for structured hiring, but at different points in the market maturity curve. Ashby is the challenger: all-in-one with deeper analytics, automated scheduling, and a modern interface favored by high-growth tech companies. Greenhouse is the established leader with the broadest integration ecosystem and the most mature structured hiring methodology. Teams choosing between them are usually deciding between analytics depth (Ashby) and ecosystem breadth (Greenhouse).
