Editor's verdict
Leonardo AI is one of the strongest freemium tools in its category, rated 4.5/5 by 7,600 users. Best for game asset and character concept art and marketing visuals with custom style training. Standout: fine-tuned custom models for specific styles. Watch out: steeper learning curve than Midjourney. Has a free tier; paid plans start at $12/mo.
Tested Leonardo AI over three weeks producing marketing creative for two product launches - hero banners, social ad variants, and blog header illustrations. Baseline was Midjourney v6 for hero work and Ideogram for anything with embedded text. Specifically wanted to validate Leonardo Style references and the fine-tuned model library for brand consistency, since the two product lines needed visually distinct but internally consistent banner sets. Roughly 1,200 generations across both lines over the test window.
Style References finally solved the brand consistency problem that Midjourney still struggles with in v6 - locked a hero shot once and reused the same lighting and color treatment across 40 banners without re-prompting from scratch every time. Realtime Canvas felt genuinely useful for sketching composition before committing to a longer gen. The fine-tuned model library was a real differentiator: the Anime Pastel model produced exactly the look I wanted for one product line, and the Photoreal models held up against Midjourney on lifestyle shots about 80 percent of the time. Batch gen with grid output saved hours of review time.
Hand and face quality is still half a step behind Midjourney v6 on closeups - had to regenerate roughly four out of ten portrait gens. Prompt adherence on any image containing text was visibly worse than Ideogram, with letters scrambling on about half of attempts even with the Prompt Magic toggle on. Inference is slower than competitors, often 25 to 40 seconds per image on Production tier, which adds friction during creative review sessions. The token economy can drain unexpectedly fast during batch generation, and the Pro tier ceiling forced me to upgrade twice during the sprint. UI organization across folders and projects gets confused above 500 saved assets.
Best fit for marketing teams who need consistent brand style across high-volume creative batches and value model variety. Midjourney remains the right pick when raw aesthetic quality on a single hero shot matters most. Ideogram wins for any creative containing text. Recraft AI handles vector and brand-asset workflows better. Pick Leonardo when style consistency at scale is the job.
Avoid if
Solo creatives chasing a single perfect hero image get better quality and faster iteration from Midjourney. Anyone generating images with embedded text - posters, ads with taglines, social cards - should pick Ideogram. Designers working in vector or needing brand-locked asset systems will reach for Recraft AI instead. Leonardo earns its slot at batch scale only.
About Leonardo AI
Leonardo AI is an image generation platform built specifically for game developers, concept artists, and creative professionals who need high-volume, stylistically consistent visual assets. While general-purpose tools like Midjourney prioritise aesthetic quality on individual generations, Leonardo is designed for production workflows where you need to generate hundreds of assets that look like they belong to the same visual universe. The platform's key differentiator is model training. You can upload a set of reference images - character sheets, environment concepts, UI elements - and train a custom model that generates new images in that exact style. For game studios building a consistent visual language, this capability reduces the per-asset iteration time dramatically and ensures stylistic coherence across an entire project. Leonardo offers both its own proprietary models and access to a selection of community-trained models across art styles: photorealism, anime, concept art, pixel art, 3D renders, and more. The model selection is deeper than most platforms, which matters when you need a specific aesthetic rather than a general-purpose output. The platform also includes Canvas, a web-based image editor for inpainting, outpainting, and compositing - letting you extend or modify generated images without switching to a separate application. The free plan provides 150 tokens daily (roughly 30–50 image generations depending on settings). Paid plans start at $12 per month for Artisan (8,500 tokens monthly), with higher tiers for larger production volumes. Leonardo is best suited to game developers, illustrators, and creative teams who need stylistically consistent images at volume rather than one-off high-quality generations.

Compared with Leonardo AI (1)
- Leonardo AI vs Stability Ai →Leonardo AI wins
Stability AI and Leonardo AI both offer Stable Diffusion-based image generation, but at different layers of the stack. Stability AI is primarily a research organization that releases model weights (SDXL, SD3) for others to run. Leonardo AI is a consumer and professional platform built on top of those models with additional fine-tuned models, training tools, and a polished UI. Most designers will prefer Leonardo's workflow. Developers who want to run models locally or build custom tools will work with Stability AI's model releases directly.
