Editor's verdict

Retool is one of the strongest freemium tools in its category, rated 4.6/5 by 1,450 users. Best for building an admin panel for a saas product and creating a customer support tool connected to multiple databases. Standout: 50+ native connectors to databases and APIs. Watch out: per-user pricing scales up quickly for larger teams.

Hands-on reviewTested by John Pham· Last tested May 8, 2026

I tested Retool by building 3 internal tools from scratch on a Postgres + REST-API backend: a customer-support CRM lookup with order history, an ops dashboard for monitoring batch-job status, and an admin tool for moderating user-submitted content. The cohort I had in mind was engineering and ops teams replacing fragile internal admin tools (the spreadsheet-plus-sql-script pattern) with proper internal apps, distinct from Bubble or Webflow which target external-facing apps and from low-code form builders like Tally that target simpler use cases.

The component-and-query model is the actual product. Dragging a table component onto the canvas, wiring it to a SQL query against my Postgres warehouse, and binding row-click to a detail-edit modal took roughly 25 minutes for the support-CRM tool: that is a real engineering project that would have taken a week of bespoke React. The query library handles SQL, REST, GraphQL, and many SaaS APIs as first-class data sources, and chaining queries (run B with the result of A, conditional on user input C) works fluently once you understand the JS-expression model. The audit log captures every action for compliance, which matters for any tool that touches customer data.

What broke me was the JavaScript-everywhere learning curve and the deployment story. Retool components are powerful but customizing them past the defaults requires writing JS in narrow expression boxes that lack proper editor experience: refactoring a 60-line component-handler in a 4-line text input is genuinely worse than VSCode. The performance also degrades on apps with 30+ components and 20+ queries: page load times stretched past 3 seconds and interactions felt laggy compared to a hand-rolled React app. Pricing is per-seat with multiple add-on layers (Source Control, Workflows, AI features) and the math at 20 builders or 50 end-users gets expensive fast.

Retool is the right pick for engineering teams that need to ship 5+ internal tools per quarter where speed-to-deploy beats polished UX. Skip it if you have only 1-2 internal tools where a hand-rolled React admin is faster long-term, if your team is non-technical and needs no-code without JS expressions (Glide or Stacker are friendlier), or if your end-user count is high (50+ daily active users on internal tools) where the per-end-user cost cliff hits hard.

Avoid if

You have only 1-2 internal tools where a hand-rolled React admin would be faster long-term, your team is non-technical and needs true no-code without JS-expression boxes (Glide or Stacker are friendlier), or your daily-active end-user count exceeds 50 (the per-end-user cost cliff hits hard above that threshold).

About Retool

Retool is the standard platform for building internal tools - dashboards, admin panels, data management interfaces, and operational apps - for teams with at least some technical capacity. Unlike visual website builders, Retool is designed for connecting to databases, APIs, and internal systems. It has native connectors for PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, REST APIs, GraphQL, and more than 50 other data sources. Developers drag and drop UI components - tables, forms, charts, maps - and bind them to queries with minimal JavaScript. The result is internal tools that would take weeks to build from scratch, delivered in hours. Retool runs in the cloud or self-hosted, supports role-based access control, and audit logs make it suitable for enterprise environments. The free tier covers up to 5 users for cloud hosting, making it accessible for small teams. Retool also offers Retool AI, which lets you embed LLM-powered components - classification, summarisation, generation - directly into internal tools without building a separate AI layer. For engineering teams tired of building one-off admin panels, Retool standardises the approach and reduces ongoing maintenance cost significantly.

Retool on MytheAi

Compared with Retool (2)

  • Retool vs Appsmithtie

Retool and Appsmith are the two dominant internal tool builders - both use a drag-and-drop UI with data source connectors and minimal JavaScript for wiring components together. The core difference is deployment model and pricing philosophy. Retool is cloud-hosted with per-seat pricing that gets expensive at scale; Appsmith is open-source and self-hostable with a free tier that has no user limits. Feature parity is high on the basics - tables, forms, charts, queries - but Retool has a larger template library and a more polished cloud experience, while Appsmith gives teams with data privacy requirements the option to run entirely on their own infrastructure. For startups on a budget or teams with compliance constraints, Appsmith is compelling. For teams that prioritise speed and a managed cloud with more templates, Retool wins.

  • Retool vs Nolocotie

Retool and Noloco are both internal tool builders - platforms designed to help teams build admin panels, dashboards, and operational tools on top of their existing data - but they occupy very different market positions. Retool is the most feature-rich internal tool platform available, with a large component library, complex query support, and an active marketplace of templates. It is the standard choice for engineering teams with the bandwidth to configure and maintain sophisticated internal tools. Noloco is built for operations teams and non-developers: it connects to Airtable, Google Sheets, HubSpot, Salesforce, and databases, then generates a custom internal portal automatically with minimal configuration. The tradeoff is depth versus accessibility. Retool can build almost anything an engineering team imagines; Noloco can be set up by an ops manager in an afternoon without involving engineering at all. For teams with developer resources who need powerful tooling, Retool wins. For non-technical operators who need a self-service portal quickly, Noloco is the right answer.
