Editor's verdict

15Five is one of the strongest paid tools in its category, rated 4.5/5 by 2,900 users. Best for hr teams building a continuous performance management culture to replace annual reviews and people operations leaders wanting visibility into manager effectiveness across the organisation. Standout: weekly check-in format surfaces team issues early before they become resignation drivers. Watch out: weekly check-in habit requires manager and employee adoption to deliver value. Starts at $4/mo with no free tier.

Hands-on reviewTested by John Pham· Last tested June 13, 2026

I tested 15Five for a 180-person SaaS company that wanted to consolidate weekly check-ins, quarterly performance reviews, and engagement surveys onto one platform. The HR team had been running check-ins through a Notion template, reviews through a Google Form, and engagement via Culture Amp every 6 months, which created data silos and review prep took 12 hours per cycle per manager.

The weekly check-in template (priorities for the week, blockers, mood rating, kudos for teammates) felt lightweight enough that submission rate climbed to 78 percent within 4 weeks, vs the Notion template that was running at 41 percent. The objectives tracking module tied weekly priorities to quarterly objectives without forcing OKR rigidity, which the engineering team preferred. Performance reviews used a 360-degree template (manager review, self-review, peer feedback from 3 selected reviewers) and the calibration session view showed all direct reports in a grid for the VP to compare ratings. Engagement survey ran quarterly with eNPS plus 8 driver questions, and the heatmap by department plus tenure surfaced an unexpected dip in the Customer Success team that prompted a 1-on-1 followup.

Setup of the performance review cycle took 4 hours to configure properly - the workflow has 7 steps (template, audience, calibration, manager reviews, peer feedback, calibration meeting, finalization) and missing any one step caused the cycle to skip people. Integrations with Slack and BambooHR worked but the Slack channel notifications for weekly check-in reminders fired at 9 AM UTC instead of respecting user timezone, so the Asia-Pacific team got pings at 5 PM local time. Pulse surveys allowed only 5 questions per pulse, which was too few for a proper diagnostic on a specific topic without combining 2 pulses into one. Pricing jumped from 8 USD per user per month for Engage tier to 16 USD per user for Perform plus Engage combined, which doubled the cost when the team needed both.

Verdict: pick 15Five when the company is 50-500 employees and needs weekly check-ins plus performance reviews plus engagement together on one platform. Pick Lattice S152 when calibration plus succession planning plus compensation review are first-class needs - Lattice has deeper review workflow with calibration matrix. Pick Culture Amp S178 when engagement survey science and benchmarking against industry are the priority over check-ins. Gusto S180 for HRIS plus payroll, Rippling for global payroll plus device management, both adjacent not directly competing.

Avoid if

Avoid 15Five when the team is below 50 employees, since the platform overhead outweighs the value at that scale and a Notion plus Google Form combination works fine. Also avoid when the priority is compensation planning or succession matrix, where the calibration view exists but does not match Lattice depth.

About 15Five

15Five is a continuous performance management platform built on the idea that weekly check-ins between managers and employees - taking approximately 15 minutes to write and 5 minutes to read - surface issues early enough to address them before they become retention or performance problems. The platform has expanded from its check-in origins to include structured 1-on-1 meeting management, OKR and goal tracking, engagement pulse surveys, and a Manager Effectiveness Indicator that gives HR teams visibility into which managers are driving high team engagement and performance.

The AI features in 2026 include Best-Self Review, an AI-assisted performance review process where the AI synthesises check-in responses, OKR progress, and peer feedback into a draft review narrative for manager review and editing. The Predictive Impact Model analyses engagement data to predict which actions - increasing 1-on-1 frequency, recognising specific employees, adjusting workload distribution - have the highest probability of improving engagement scores in specific teams. The High Five recognition module enables peer-to-peer recognition tied to company values.

For HR and people operations teams that want to invest in manager development as the lever for engagement and retention improvement, 15Five's manager effectiveness focus is its clearest differentiator from broader platforms. The platform provides managers with direct feedback on how their teams feel about management quality, coaching prompts tied to specific weak areas, and tracking data showing whether interventions are working over time. 15Five integrates with Slack, Microsoft Teams, Workday, BambooHR, and Rippling for embedded check-in prompts in communication tools and HRIS data sync.
