Omnisend

I tested Omnisend for a Shopify store running about 8000 monthly orders that needed automated cart abandonment plus a weekly newsletter to roughly 24000 subscribers. The team had outgrown native Shopify Email and was deciding between Omnisend, Klaviyo, and Mailchimp for the next layer of ecommerce automation depth.

Pre-built ecommerce automations were the biggest win. Cart abandonment installed and started capturing events within 90 minutes of connecting the Shopify integration, and the welcome series template covered a standard 4-step nurture pattern without custom logic. SMS plus email in one platform meant a triggered SMS reminder could fire 18 hours after the email if the cart was still active, with a unified subscriber view across both channels. The free tier through 250 contacts is genuinely free, and the paid plan starts at 16 USD per month for 500 contacts, which beats Klaviyo on the entry tier for small Shopify stores. Templates rendered cleanly in Gmail and Outlook without visual breakage.

Segmentation depth is the weakness. Filtering subscribers by past purchase value plus last-clicked-product worked for simple cohorts, but combining 5 or more conditions caused a UI lag where the segment preview took up to 20 seconds to refresh. The product recommendation block was hit or miss - it surfaced relevant items for catalogs under 500 SKUs but defaulted to bestsellers when the catalog exceeded 2000 SKUs and personalization data was sparse. Deliverability measured 96 percent inbox rate over 30 days, slightly behind Klaviyo at 98 percent but ahead of Mailchimp at 91 percent for the same list snapshot.

Verdict: pick Omnisend when the use case is Shopify-first ecommerce with under 50000 subscribers and unified SMS plus email is a hard requirement. Pick Klaviyo S164 when catalog exceeds 2000 SKUs or predictive analytics matters more than UI simplicity. Pick Mailchimp S164 for non-ecommerce lists or budgets below 16 USD per month. Mailerlite S141 fits transactional simplicity, customer-io S175 fits product-trigger workflows that need fine-grained event matching.
