Editor's verdict
Streak is a solid freemium pick, rated 4.2/5 by 2,940 users. Best for solo founders and consultants managing sales pipelines from their inbox and small teams on google workspace wanting crm without a new tool. Standout: lives entirely inside Gmail - zero context switching for email-centric teams. Watch out: chrome extension only - no mobile app with full functionality. Has a free tier; paid plans start at $15/mo.
I tested Streak for a 5-person business development consulting firm running outbound deal flow via Gmail-first workflow tracking approximately 180 active deals across pipeline stages from initial outreach through proposal sent through contract signed. The team had been on HubSpot Free CRM for 14 months and wanted to evaluate Streak as a lighter-weight Gmail-native alternative that eliminated context-switching between inbox and a separate CRM tab.
Gmail Chrome extension was the killer feature. Streak rendered the CRM pipeline directly inside the Gmail interface as a sidebar panel, so every email reply auto-logged to the deal context without manual CRM data entry. Email tracking with read receipts plus link click tracking plus mail merge from spreadsheet templates handled the 80-message-per-week outreach volume per consultant without leaving Gmail. Pipeline customization let the team build a 7-stage deal pipeline plus a separate 4-stage hiring pipeline plus a vendor management pipeline within the same Gmail account, each with custom fields plus deal value tracking plus probability scoring. Send Later plus snooze plus thread bumping reduced the manual follow-up reminder workload that the team had been managing via Boomerang separately. Free tier covered solo users with up to 50 contact records plus basic email tracking, then the Pro plan at 49 USD per user per month unlocked unlimited contacts plus mail merge plus reports.
CRM depth was thin past Gmail-centric workflows. Reporting and forecasting capability lagged HubSpot plus Pipedrive significantly - deal velocity plus stage conversion rate plus forecast accuracy required exporting CSV to a spreadsheet for analysis. Integration with non-Gmail tools (Slack, Calendly, Calendly meetings, Notion) required Zapier middleware for 5 of the 8 workflows the team wanted, vs HubSpot native integrations covering more. Mobile app for sending emails plus updating deals worked but the rich pipeline view lived on desktop Chrome only. Multi-user team collaboration was workable but lacked the role-based permission depth of HubSpot Team plans - everyone with pipeline access saw all deals. Workspace permissions did not stop a junior consultant from accidentally editing the senior partner deal records. Backup plus data export was available but the format was not directly compatible with HubSpot or Pipedrive for migration, locking in users who wanted to switch later.
Verdict: pick Streak when the team is 1-10 person consulting or small business with Gmail-first workflow plus deal volume under 200 active deals plus per-user budget under 50 USD per month plus simple pipeline reporting needs. Pick HubSpot S139 when the team is 10-plus, marketing automation plus deal forecasting plus content management matter, and budget allows 50-plus USD per user. Pick Pipedrive S168 when sales-first pipeline visualization plus straightforward CRM at 14-49 USD per user matters more than marketing-CRM integration. Pick Apollo.io S185 when outbound prospecting plus B2B database plus sequence engagement is the primary use case. Pick Close S181 for SMB sales with integrated CRM plus dialer. Salesforce Einstein S134 for enterprise CRM with AI sophistication at 150-plus USD per user. Zoho CRM S169 for cost-conscious Zoho ecosystem orgs.
Avoid if
Avoid Streak when the team is 10-plus people needing role-based permissions plus deal forecasting depth since pipeline reporting required CSV export workaround. Also avoid when planning to migrate later since data export format was not directly compatible with HubSpot or Pipedrive for clean transition.
About Streak
Streak is a CRM that lives entirely inside Gmail, making it the most frictionless option for small sales teams and solo operators who live in their inbox. Rather than requiring a separate tool, Streak adds pipeline views, contact tracking, email templates, merge fields, and workflow stages directly into the Gmail interface through a Chrome extension. There is no separate app to learn or maintain.
Pipelines are displayed as board views inside Gmail, where emails automatically group with the associated contact or deal. Streak tracks when recipients open emails and how many times they view messages, giving sales reps direct signal on prospect interest. AI features include email drafting assistance, automatic contact enrichment from email signatures and LinkedIn profiles, and template suggestions based on the sales stage.
Streak supports any pipeline-based workflow beyond sales - recruiting, fundraising, real estate, and support operations are common use cases. The free plan is generous for individual users. Paid plans add team pipelines, custom fields, advanced permissions, and API access. For teams standardised on Google Workspace who want a CRM without the adoption friction of a separate tool, Streak eliminates the biggest CRM failure mode: reps not logging activities because it takes too long.
